You must take care of your cooling system just like an oil change in your vehicle too. We at Autolex recommend running your air conditioner for at least 10 minutes a month, even in the winter. Along with the refrigerant, a special oil circulates in the system. The oil lubricates air conditioning components, and keeps the seals resilient. Low refrigerant and lubricating oil means that the air conditioning parts will wear out prematurely, and we all know that air conditioning repairs can be costly in and around Lehigh Valley.
Your air conditioning system may seem complicated, and, quite frankly, it is. First you take Freon gas and place it in a sealed system. The Freon is pressurized using a compressor. As it’s pressurized, it gets hot by absorbing the heat around it. This hot gas is then circulated through a series of tubes that dissipate the heat. Scientifically, the gas removes heat rather than adds cold. The gas can lose lots of its heat, and become really cold, when you reduce the pressure. As it cools it becomes a liquid. This is when you get cold air blowing on your face and you feel a lot less sweaty.
Air conditioning service at Autolex auto repair in Allentown starts with a visual inspection of the components for signs of damage or leaks. The compressor is driven by a belt from the engine, most often the serpentine belt, so it’s inspected for cracks or wear. The air conditioning compressor and other components are checked for proper operation by your Autolex auto repair service technician. Then comes the leak test. If a leak is detected, often in a hose or connection, it’s repaired and the system is retested. Autolex service technician in Allentown will also perform a temperature drop test.
If needed, the old refrigerant is evacuated and the system is recharged with clean, fresh refrigerant. A final test insures that the air conditioner is working, and you’re on your way.
How often should this be done varies from vehicle to vehicle. Your car or light trucks owner’s manual will have the manufacturer’s recommendation. Autolex recommends typically every two years.
